The Spirit of the Tree

A birch tree grew near my Mother's house, in a neighbor's garden. My Mom could see it out of her dining room window, and she loved looking at it in all seasons. Birds sat in it singing their songs, the branches swayed happily in the wind, and the tree grew tall in all the years.

But one day it was decided that the tree had to be cut down. It was a sad day for everyone who enjoyed the tree.

My Mother requested that I make a stitched portrait of the birch tree to give to her neighbors. I put their children, Yente and Binck playing happily next to the tree, and the familiar blackbirds perched on its branches.

Here is her neighbor Sophia with her stitched tree picture, "The Spirit of the Tree"
